The Fearless Girl statue, which Burke+Okrent admires and graces our home page, has been given an iconic lace collar to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away last Friday, September 18. The statue, commissioned by State Street Global Advisors and placed in the heart of America‘s financial district since International Women‘s Day 2017, was designed by Kristen Visbal as a statement of equality. It offers courage to Fearless Girls of all ages!
Ginsburg was famed for wearing the neck garment as a symbol of defiance, referring to the lace loop as her ”dissent collar”. Much more than a fashion statement, the political meaning behind the accessory was a clear and conscious decision to ‘unapologetically feminize‘ a rejection of majority opinion according to the New York Times.
